Meher Baba:

A Short Biographical Sketch

Compiled by
DARWIN SHAW

EHER BABA was born of Persian parents in Poona, India, on February 25th, 1894. His father, Sheriar Irani, was a real seeker of GOD. In 1913, while Meher was a student at Deccan College at Poona, he met an ancient woman, Hazrat Babajan, a Spiritually Perfect Master. Through her God-given Grace, MEHER BABA'S consciousness was raised from the ordinary level to the state of God-consciousness. His absorption in God-consciousness led to his becoming completely merged in the Infinite Ocean of Divine Love, Bliss, Knowledge and Goodness; thus realizing the Infinity. For about nine months he was completely unconscious of the things of the world.

In 1915, while still in this transcended state, MEHER BABA was led to contact another Spiritual Perfect Master, Upasni Maharaj of Sakori. During a seven-year period of close contact with this great Master, he was gradually brought down to normal consciousness, without in any way interrupting or diminishing the sublime experience of God-consciousness in which he had become permanently established. At year end 1921, MEHER BABA became a God-realized or Perfect Master. He has written an account of these spiritual experiences; this book, however, has not been published yet. In 1923 he ceased writing, except for his signature.

MEHER BABA began his spiritual mission in 1922, when he drew the first close disciples around him and subsequently trained them for an arduous spiritual life of selfless service. In 1924 he made his headquarters at Meherabad, near Ahmednagar, India. Here, during the following years, many of his Eastern and Western disciples have participated in various spiritual and humanitarian activities under the direct guidance of the Master. These included the Hazrat Babajan School, where the students received free schooling; Meher Ashram, a free boarding house for students, one branch of which was for the spiritual awakening of selected candidates;
