ON THE "LIVING DEAD"
All beings on earth are in the Gross Sphere (Anna-Bhumika, or Aalame-Nascot). At the same time that does not mean that one cannot experience the other sphere of existence, nor that the earth by itself constitutes the whole of the gross sphere. Let us suppose, without taking the words "air" and "sky" and "sun" in their literal sense, that the Subtle Sphere (Pran-Bhumika or Aalame-Malakoot) exists in the "air"; that the Mental Sphere (Mun-Bhumika or Aalame-Jabroot) is situated in the "sky," and that the Highest Spiritual State (Vidnyan-Bhumika or the Arshe-Aala) is in the "Sun," and that the "Sun" is all Power, all Knowledge and all Bliss, and is the Source of Infinite beauty, sound, light, in fact, the Source of Everything.
When it is said in the Vedanta that the merging of the individual soul in the Oversoul results in the individual soul becoming the sun, the reference is to the transformation of the reflected or borrowed Light into the very Source of Light Itself and not to its literally becoming the sun that shines on earth. The sun visibly pervades the earth, air and sky and therefore analogically the sun is meant to be the very source of everything and the centre of every circle. That is the reason why in Sufism a Perfect Master is recognized as the Qutub, i.e., the Centre. In fact the position of every Perfect Master (Sadguru or Qutub), the Prophet or Avatar is in the "Sun," i.e., the Vidnyan Bhumika, the Highest Spiritual State.
The radiation of the Lustre of the Eternal and Infinite Power which is the "Sun," first passes through the Mental Sphere and is made use of by those in the Mental Sphere. It then passes on through the Subtle Sphere where it is utilized by those in the Subtle Sphere. And finally the radiation filters through to the gross sphere where it shines as the third and dimmest reflection of the original Lustre.
By the power, so to speak, borrowed from the Mental Sphere, those in the Subtle Sphere can easily read the thoughts of others in the same way as a man with gross eyes can almost effortlessly see anything and everything in the gross sphere.
With or without the gross body, those in the Subtle Sphere eat, drink and make use of their subtle bodies, possess clothes and even such things as neckties
