At 9:30 the interviews began downstairs, each person first "checking in" at Ella's table by the door. As their names were called, the people stood up in line, appointment slips in hand, behind the small screen at the entrance to the interview room where Baba was. There were even those peeping through the hinges of the screen, who had to be asked to leave, as the line doubled and tripled with eager newcomers, many of whom had flown from far parts of the country just to see Baba for these few minutes.
Among the crowd were several expectant young mothers; two of them fell to talking, and one rubbed her tummy with a happy smile. When she came to see Baba, He rubbed His tummy in exactly the same way, with a twinkle in His eye, though He couldn't have seen her! He blessed the child within her and told her it was a very special soul.
After lunch, which was Baba's only meal of the day and which He took privately upstairs, He came down again for more interviews, past the crowds waiting for Him by the elevators. Incidentally, these elevator operators and also those at the switchboard, had their own "trials" during these four busy days, with so many people moving up and down or calling between rooms. After the first day, they just resigned themselves, not without good humor, to this mass onslaught on their facilities. They, too, "contacted Baba!"
After an hour or so, when the interviews slowed down, Baba invited all His lovers from the different groups to come in. Others present joined them and sat down around Him. The blinds were drawn while Lowell Shaw, Charmian Duce, Don Stevens and an NBC-TV cameraman prepared to take movies. The giant movie lights brilliantly illuminated Baba and the little group around Him. Undisturbed and happy to be with us all, Baba gave us a short "talk," as follows:
"When you become One with God the bliss that you experience is eternal, infinite. There is no break in that bliss; it is continual. And then you can make others happy. You get the authority to make others happy.
"The only thing that I have been repeating ever since the first time I came, is: Love God. Age after age I have been saying nothing but, Love God.
"Love. Everyone now uses the word love; it has been made so very cheap. If one really loves, one would never utter that word. What does
