tickets, etc., and returned on Saturday night by car, late, ready to drive Baba back to town again Sunday morning at 6 A.M.
There were finances to attend to, but as always in doing Baba's work, Baba sends you off with his blessing and with his strength always with you. Plans were made and Cook's fixed us all up at Hotel Eden, Lugano, giving me the times of trains, etc. I returned to Baba with this information. In working for Baba you must never decide or arrange anything without first consulting him. For some reason, he wishes to attend to each minute detail himself. In talking to Chanji about this, he explained it thus: "Nothing can go wrong if Baba is behind it all and knows where you are and what you are doing. Never do anything without consulting him first." To the Western mind this was a little difficult to understand at first, for we tried to save Baba all domestic and unnecessary details, and over and over again I had to learn this was not Baba's way. He was equally concerned in the unnecessary details and always had to be consulted.
I returned late Saturday night to find a battle going on between Baba and one of his circle who would not be comforted and would not do as Baba asked. Baba paced up and down the room trying to get this one to be reasonable and listen to him, adding so much to Baba's suffering by not obeying his wishes or trusting him fully. (We all tried, but with no success.) Baba, always patient, just waiting, waiting, until we learn to understand his ways of working. He is such a wonderful actor that it is not easy to know when he is serious.
On this visit to East Challacombe, some found fault with others there. So, one afternoon Baba called us all up to his room. He kept us with him for a while, and then made the one who made accusations against another repeat them in front of us all; and the one accused had to say whether she was proud and conceited. Baba often acts in this way and tries to get each to forgive and understand the other.
Sunday came; we left silently at six with the rest coming down to the car to see us off. The boys had left the previous afternoon with Stephanie and went to her house. We came by car with Baba and had a lovely trip up, stopping on the way for a meal of cheese, salad, tea, and cake. The car broke down twice and we did not get home to 32 Russell Road until after teatime, tired but happy.
Before continuing with the arrival in London, here follows Quentin Tod's Diary of this same period:
A gloomy winter passed; the only people connected with Baba that I saw were Mabel and Margaret. Towards the spring, news came of Baba's second visit to the West and America. Delia, Kitty, Kim, and I think, Zilla got up a small entertainment for him and it was more difficult to get into it than to one of
