greater love for him and her children. As this was what Desmond wanted, he consented. That same evening Zilla returned very thrilled from the week at St. Leonard's with her grandparents. Kimco were all there and welcomed her in the spare room where we were all assembled awaiting the result of the interview upstairs between Baba and Desmond. Kim was with us and Zilla felt the very air electric. She asked what the matter was and why we all seemed rather depressed. One or two others called that evening, but Baba seemed a little tired and we all went to bed early. The boys returned to Stephanie's. The next morning, I was busy with Cooks making final arrangements regarding trains, hotels, etc.
Kim sent Baba a lovely little basket of flowers and seemed delighted to come to Lugano and all were gay and happy these days. Zilla felt a little sad because she had to return to school and could not go to Lugano. The last evening she was very miserable and after returning to bed, wept that she had to return to school, and in her sleep called out for Baba. I was sleeping next door so went in and woke her up out of her dream and pacified her. She returned to school on Wednesday afternoon.
I cannot remember what we did the rest of this day. I know that Baba was busy with Tod arranging boats, etc., for their trip to America on May 14th on the Bremen from Southampton. Every detail of each trip Baba decided himself. Tod, Meredith, and Margaret Starr were going also. They thought possibly for a year, as Baba had given out that he was definitely speaking in June — probably the 14th. We, who were to be left in London, were already planning to be together and to listen in to Baba's "first" words which he said would be: "I am Krishna, I am Buddha, I am Christ."
We left Thursday at 9 A.M. for Victoria Station and the Dover-Calais train, joining the boys from Stephanie's at the station. As usual, we had masses of luggage! The party consisted of Baba, with Adi Jr., Dr. Ghani, Chanji, Adi Sr., Behram, Jal, and five of us — Minta, Delia, Kim, myself, and Margaret (who came on Sunday, May 1st). Mabel could not leave the dancing school.
Seven from the East and five Europeans! Did ever such a party go abroad together before? We thought nothing of it! It all seemed so natural with Baba looking after us. We were not looking after him, but he after us. There were a few to see us off at the station, Tod (of course), the Purdoms, Mary King, Mrs. DeLeon, Desmond (I believe), and others. We had a comfortable journey and crossing. Minta and Delia were a little seasick, however.
We got to Paris on April 28th about 6 P.M., and had a meal in a little restaurant in the station. I remember that Baba ate very little. He was in one of his thoughtful and working moods. We then took a stroll in the streets and finally left Paris for Lugano by train; the boys had one compartment and we and Baba another.
