explained that this man was an agent of his. Baba repeated he had come here for a complete rest from work, and to do this he must hand over his work temporarily to someone else; and this he had done this morning to the man we had seen, his agent. They spoke to each other only by the tapping of the stick and a kind of inward recognition which was understood, and at that moment Baba raised this laborer from the second or third plane to the fourth or fifth. This was necessary or he could not have taken over the work Baba was giving him to do. As we approached the end of the lake, the scenery became more beautiful.

On landing, we had to get into a mountain railway and very slowly mounted the valley to get to the top, and a magnificent view of the valleys and snowy mountains. Baba compared it to Kashmir. He and the boys were so happy! We reached the top of Mt. Generoso — there was plenty of snow, but it was rather damp underfoot and cold out of the sun. Some rested here and others explored the very summit. As we walked up, I remember Chanji saying that this place would one day become famous as Baba had been to it.

We walked up a narrow path, throwing snowballs at each other. Baba was so happy and gay! The view on the very top was beautiful, so wide, and extending for miles. There were a few guides and sellers of postcards. There was also another couple climbing with us. They were interested in Baba and kept looking at him. Another gentleman with a camera photographed him. The sun was glorious. We then returned to where the others were resting under sun-umbrellas at a table. The only hotel provided us with a table, plates, etc., and hot drinks. We got out our food — potato chips, radishes, and cheese. Baba always asked for these on a picnic. He always eats better in a train or on a picnic than in a hotel.

After lunch, we all slept a while in the sun. Then it got cold and we moved inside the inn and to Baba's joy, we found ping pong. We started to play, * and the rest explored the hotel. The proprietor was anxious that we should all sleep the night there. It was Baba's first wish to spend two days there, but the weather was not good enough. Then Baba grew serious and we were all called to listen to some explanations. Some of us were in a laughing mood; how patient Baba was. He tried to get us into his mood. For the benefit of others, I pass on one of the boy's remarks after this laughing episode. Dr. Ghani came to me and said, "Many of these explanations which Baba is giving you now, we have never heard. He will only explain when he is in the mood and if you laugh, joke, or seem disinterested, the mood to tell will pass from Baba and you will lose altogether what he wanted to tell you, so do all try to control your laughter when Baba seems ready to talk." We all said we would try, and yet on more than one occasion we lost — who knows what?

* In her book “Love Alone Prevails” Kitty Davy says “...we played awhile and then explored the hotel.”
