key on one, at least, and fulfilling a certain promise he had made to the husband of one of us before we left England. This promise which he kept faithfully caused him much suffering and made things difficult for all It was so hectic on occasion that one of the party ran away and was found in a church praying on the altar steps. Another was sent to find her and bring her back to the hotel. But all was clear and with meaning to Baba.
Some evenings we sat indoors and had Indian music. On the occasion mentioned above, I recall Baba awaiting the return of the wanderer. He took up St.Augustine', Confessions and turned to the page on which were the words to the effect, "He that is not willing to suffer for the Master", etc. —. Baba then remarked, "I am testing each in turn here for future work, and see how some take it when called upon to suffer by the Master!" To one he did say 'you have stood the test well."
At last Saturday, May 7th, came and we left by an afternoon train for Paris arriving there about 8 A.M. the next morning. We were expected back at 32 Russell Road for the week before Baba's departure for America on the Bremen.
While in Lugano, "John Bull" published the scandalous article about Baba and the Ashram at Nasik, saying — amongst other falsehoods — that the Ashram had been closed by Government orders. It is all a very good thing. I must have opposition." He then called all the party together and had me tell them what the letter said. He again explained how this article had been written, and that I was to write to Father saying Baba thoroughly understood; that the article was due to a man called Dastur, once a devoted disciple who since had turned because Baba would not work miracles for him, and how he would come back to Baba, but meanwhile the opposition caused by his turning was very good and necessary for the spiritual work. We all felt worried, not knowing how our people would take the article. There was only one thing to do — hurry back and make fresh arrangements. Here again I was to return beforehand. Baba called me in and made me promise not to worry, saying that all would be well.
I felt like bursting into tears but, as I said to Baba, this would be of no help to him at the moment, the only thing was to get on with the job. We left at noon and I don't remember any difficulty on the journey. We
