house whilst the funicular made a brief stop and demanded radishes and, another time, she went to the best hotel in Lugano ― after 9 P.M. — and asked for potato chips. She capped this by cabling to Quentin Tod to send out several packets by air.

“On one of the lake excursions, a very interesting old man sat opposite Baba and Baba kept tapping his stick on the floor of the boat Afterwards he told us this man was an agent on the third plane and that he had raised him to the fourth.

"He also told us many things about his Circle and about the evolutionary plan from unconscious divinity to conscious divinity.

"After Lugano, we returned to Paris and remained there a few days. Completely exhausted and drained of all emotions, we returned to London. It was as if one had lived through years of intense experience in this short period. We were to learn that this is a usual experience among all his disciples, for it is in this emptied state that Baba can best work on the subconscious. After the emptying process. usually a renewed vitality is felt as if a purging and burning up of the dross has taken place. In psychological terms it is called catharsis and often brings the patient back to health and normality.

"Baba often asks the seemingly impossible, but it is the effort made that is important.

"The "John Bull" article, full of venom, had been published during our absence in Italy, stating half-truths and twisted facts, referring to the rich women disciples and the money Baba had taken from his disciples; but Baba only smiled and would not let us even send a reply. He said antagonism also helped his work and that it was better than indifference.

“On the way back from Lugano, he said he wanted a dog to take with him to America, so several of us promptly presented him with a puppy which he called "'Mikko" after our group, Kimco. He kept it for the two nights, then the day before he left for America he told me he was leaving Mikko behind and that I was to care for him. Mikko was a great trial at first, being untrained, but soon the whole family grew fond of him. He caused me continual alarm as he seemed to be always developing some ailment which needed treatment. It was probably my complete inexperience with animals, as we had never had any in our home, not even a kitten.

"Soon after, Baba wrote "Don't worry if anything happens to Mikko."; but it did not happen until my return from the first Italian trip that I was told Mikko had been run over. Baba often uses contacts with animals, especially dogs and birds, for some inner work in which they probably act as an inner link. Their evolution is considerably speeded up by this contact with a Master.
