the twin in appearance of an agent in Warsaw that 'Y' had to identify in a month's time.

“Before descending to the beach, ‘Y’, who was for a moment walking side by side with Baba, had passed but had not looked at the white-haired old man. We never saw him again, a fact that led to considerable difficulty later in Warsaw.

"He admitted his error in disobeying, but he said, 'Surely we should use our common sense and warn you when you are likely, in the West, to put yourself in a false position.'

"Baba agreed: It was your duty to warn me, but should I still insist, you must give way.'

"When the homily was complete and harmony restored, we were still seated round, but not actually inside the tent. At that moment, the rather indignant owner came down the steps with two large dogs and reminded us that it was a private beach. Feeling a little small, we gathered our belongings and, like a band of gypsies, moved on. Such storms and stresses usually punctuated the picture of idleness and apparent pleasure. Baba brushes away the annoyance and after is even kinder to the victim; but the occasion is unpleasant.

"The 11th day of August, 1932, was to be a special holiday. Delia and Minta treated us to a ride in a large awninged carriage drawn by two horses. We climbed up the steep road to Portofino Vetta, festooned with flowers picked from the roadside and garlanded with vine leaves, laughing, singing 'Daisy, Daisy', and playing jokes. A bacchanal! Peasants looked at us in surprise but not in disapproval. It was Italy, not England. To one unaccustomed to such light-hearted revelry, it seemed like some antique chariot of the wanton Gods. A curious feeling as if time and space, and the opinions of men, were of no account and we were taking part in some more significant ascent than a trip to Portofino Vetta. When we had climbed two-thirds of the way up, Baba suddenly expressed a wish to eat. Tod, however, said that as we were nearly there, it would be better to wait. Baba did not insist, but his mood was spoiled. By experience we learn that what seems sudden whims are outward symbols of Baba's tenor working. On the top of the mountain, we sat in the sun or beneath the shade of the trees, laughed, feasted, and slept like happy children. This Watteau tableau was crossed by a slight storm — the petulance of a child. Despite the storm, it was a very happy day."

The following is from Delia's account   (Santa Margherita period — July 29th)

"Baba did not come to Europe again till July, 1932, when a group of us went to be with him in Italy. We all stayed at the Villa Fiorenza near Santa Margherita. This was the most carefree and happy time I have had with Baba. He was in a holiday mood — it was summer, and the surroundings were delightful. We were allowed to bathe every morning and Baba came with us, followed by Kaka with a big umbrella. On two occasions we went out in a boat, but for spiritual reasons Baba would not swim, although he told us he was an expert swimmer. We must have presented a queer picture, but the Italians are a marvelous people. They never stared, but took it as the most natural occurrence to see an Indian with long hair and flowing white robes followed by a group of men and Western women in gay attire. We had the pensione practically to ourselves, eating on a veranda facing the sea; just one English couple in the annex.

"Every morning Baba came 'round our rooms to see that we were up. He teased us and petted us. Some of the evenings we sat with him listening to Hawaiian, Spanish, or Paul Robeson records, or gave an impromptu entertainment for his amusement; or just sat on the terrace, the silence broken only by the lapping waves. These are among my most precious recollections. We felt him drawing us closer in love. Teasingly he said 'Make the most of this, it won't come again. Later on you will see very little of me and then my disciples will do all the work.'

"He loved Italy and particularly Portofino, and he said there were spiritual reasons for our being there and
