Interview With Baba

by Oxford Group Members

Q. What hinders me from being a better husband and father?

A. You must try as far as possible to live a life that Christ lived. Not by theory and by intellectual understanding only should one try to follow Christianity, but by a feeling that must be lived: Love!

Q . How can I do that?

A. To develop love, you have to do it practically — that is, you have to experience it in everyday life. You must lessen your desires and make others happy by thinking less of your own happiness. This can be done. By desire I mean selfish desires. If you are walking along the road and you find a man stricken with poverty and lying helpless, you will pityingly look at him and go on. If, further on you find your own brother in the same condition, you will at once give him all possible aid. This is generally the case. You will find your mentality lacks that development of love which true Christianity needs. It is all very practical and very simple — only people make it complicated.

Q. Are you ready to give your love to those who, on the basis of the New Testament conception, think you to be wrong in regard to your Christ Consciousness, but who are open for the influence of your love?

A. If you love Jesus, and if you can follow Christ's teachings and live his life, that is more than enough. You don't need to follow me, for by following Jesus with all love, you will indirectly follow me. That is what I know.

Q. Do you believe that only through you the way to God is possible?

Wherefrom do you take the inspiration of your Christ Consciousness?

A. If you try to find God in your own self, where is the necessity to find it in special manifestation? Because it is difficult to realize God, it is necessary to have the help of One who has realized God.

— O —

Baba left Knightsbridge Hotel, S.W. London, on December 14th, 1932, for Zurich, arriving there on December 15th. A reception had been prepared for him by Otto Haas Heye, who has a big art school in Zurich and is an old friend of Norina's. Baba saw people from 11 to 1 P.M. and from 3 to 7 P.M., after which he walked by the lake until 8 P.M.

The following is from Quentin Tod's diary, giving a brief itinerary of the last ten days of the trip:

December 16th: "Baba and his group left Zurich at 10:15 A.M. and travelled by the 'Lac des 4 Cantons' over the St. Gothard via Chiaria, Lugano, and Milan, reaching Genoa at 9:15 P.M.

"Stayed the night at the Savoy Majestic, and the next day we sailed for Egypt on the 'Esperia', leaving Norina behind, as she was to sail for America.

"We reached Alexandria at 5 P.M. on December 29th*, and Cairo the next morning at 5 A.M. Adi, Behram. and Vishnu left by train for Port Said almost immediately, where they sailed on the ‘P.O. Maldera' for India; leaving Baba, Kaka, and myself in Cairo. During our stay in Cairo, we stayed at a small hotel, very well run by an Italian, Signor Morandi.

"On the 23rd of December, 1932, we left Cairo by car and spent Christmas at the English Winter Hotel in Helonan.

“On Christmas Day we left by car for Sakkara and spent the day there, lunching in the shadow of one of the Pyramids. We returned to Cairo on the
