"God Speaks" and Baba asked him if he would write an introduction to the messages of the tour, when they were published in book form, a job He gave to the Sufism Reoriented group.* Dr. Evans-Wentz agreed. A few minutes later I stood talking to Dr. Evans-Wentz in the hall when Baba came out of the room and stood silently and humbly in the buzzing throng. I felt a twist of the heart to see Him there for it seemed the noise about Him did not cease as He slipped quietly upstairs. About half an hour later He called for the "five" but I was asleep with exhaustion in one of the rooms and could not be found, thus missing the Master's darshan, a painful experience that many others had in Hollywood, scattered as we were here and there.
That evening Baba had promised to visit the group of Dante Cardella, who had learned of the Master's visit a few months previously. Since his studio was small most of us did not go. Miss Lri Guron describes this episode for us:
"At 7:00 p.m. August 1, 1956, on a warm evening, sixty persons were gathered in a modest apartment in Hollywood, there to spend what only a few realized was to be one of the most significant hours of their lives. Everyone had been requested to remain silent, and everyone waited in hushed expectancy for the time of Baba's arrival. At 7:15 p m. a plain sedan pulled up. Several of Baba's mandali and Meher Baba himself emerged. Baba walked briskly up the path and into the living room, beaming love to all. Silence reigned, Baba had arrived.
"It was quite an experience to spend an evening with a Being who dominated the entire scene, commanded your fascinated attention and did so without speaking a word. Humility in action—a living breathing example of this little-understood and much maligned (in the West) quality; Baba's very presence is dynamic with the humility and love he radiates.
"Every available space was occupied, including the floor and the table tops, and somehow, miraculously, over sixty persons were seated. Most of the persons present are relative newcomers to the path of spiritual development.
